Its primary purpose is to show that university instructors make pedagogically productive and novel use of laptops in the classroom. As the chapters illustrate, laptops indeed offer rich new opportunities to make classes more student-active, thereby enhancing student engagement and learning. Moreover, these benefits can accrue without compromising the quality of student-instructor interaction or increasing the student workload. The issue also has a timely secondary purpose: to advise institutional leaders on how to make a laptop mandate successful at their university. Clemson University's mandate has meet with tremendous and documented success. Their Laptop Faculty Development Program ensures that faculty interested in teaching with laptops receive extensive pedagogical as well as technical traiing before they take on a laptop course. Some of the more creative and effective laptop faculty are showcased in this volume. This is the 101st issue of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Teaching and Learning.\u003c/b\u003e

Enhancing Self-esteem in the Classroom
By:Denis Lawrence
Published on 2006-03-01 by Pine Forge Press

Praise for the first edition: `The underlying philosophy of this practical book is that raising self-esteem in pupils (including dyslexics) will lead to achievement of higher academic results and fewer behaviour problems. This book is primarily for primary and secondary teachers but would provide much material for discussion among SpLD teachers, given the unexpected and controversial results of Denis Lawrence's research' - Dyslexia Contact `Many useful suggestions offered in this book about learning activities are likely to help pupils to feel better about themselves, to learn to respect others and to experience how feelings can be expressed safely' - British Journal of Special Education Raising self-esteem in pupils can lead to the achievement of higher academic results and fewer behavioural problems. Outlining in simple terms what self-esteem is and providing strategies to support it in the classroom, this book includes clear explanations of the terminology and theory behind self-esteem, and lots of practical examples and useful activities for use with children. The book also covers the main issues surrounding the self-esteem of practitioners. It sets out tried-and-tested strategies that teachers can use to recognise and reduce stress and maintain their self-esteem. This new edition has been fully updated and now includes new case study material and activities.

Self and Social Identity in Educational Contexts
By:Kenneth I. Mavor,Michael J. Platow,Boris Bizumic
Published on 2017-02-24 by Routledge

This innovative volume integrates social identity theory with research on teaching and education to shed new and fruitful light on a variety of different pedagogical concerns and practices. It brings together researchers at the cutting edge of new developments with a wealth of teaching and research experience. The work in this volume will have a significant impact in two main ways. First and foremost, the social identity approach that is applied will provide the theoretical and empirical platform for the development of new and creative forms of practice in educational settings. Just as the application of this theory has made significant contributions in organisational and health settings, a similar benefit will accrue for conceptual and practical developments related to learners and educators – from small learning groups to larger institutional settings – and in the development of professional identities that reach beyond the classroom. The chapters demonstrate the potential of applying social identity theory to education and will stimulate increased research activity and interest in this domain. By focusing on self, social identity and education, this volume investigates with unprecedented clarity the social and psychological processes by which learners’ personal and social self-concepts shape and enhance learning and teaching. Self and Social Identity in Educational Contexts will appeal to advanced students and researchers in education, psychology and social identity theory. It will also be of immense value to educational leaders and practitioners, particularly at tertiary level.

>>Learning and Instructional Technologies for the 21st Century

Learning and Instructional Technologies for the 21st Century
By:Leslie Moller,Douglas M. Harvey
Published on 2008-12-16 by Springer Science & Business Media

Learning and Instructional Technologies for the 21st Century gathers research which identify models and approaches to improve learning through the inclusion of technology. These papers, from leading researchers and thinkers in instructional technology, begin by refuting the idea that education can be improved through more or better technology. Instead, the contributors emphasize specific, research-based ideas, which re-evaluate learning, reorganize schools, redirect technology, and provide instruction. Acknowledging the critical role of technology, these contributions explore technology's main advantage--its ability to enable advanced learning designs and emerging paradigms as well as to evolve learning interactions. While each paper explores a specific aspect of the role of technology, the collection shares this common theme. Without sufficient consideration to the process of learning and its many facets, technological availability alone will not provide a sustained impact on the educational process. Originating from the first AECT Research Symposium, Learning and Instructional Technologies for the 21st Century will be of interest to researchers and practitioners alike.

Student Self-Esteem
By:Gail McEachron-Hirsh
Published on 1995-09-28 by R&L Education

From foreword: Few psychological variables affecting the lives of children are given as much emphasis by mental health professionals and the general public as self-esteem. Psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan viewed the concept of self as the |bedrock of the human personality,| and a deterioration in self-esteem has long been associated by both clinicians and researchers with a wide range of difficulties - from depression and delinquency to eating disorders and school failure. The message has not been lost on parents and teachers, who constantly search for ways to improve the motivation and well-being of their children by helping them enhance their self-concept. As one popular book on the subject tells its readers, self-esteem is no less than the |mainspring that slates every child for success or failure as a human being.| Careful observations of the child tend to reinforce the validity of such views-and thus the importance of this unusually rich volume.
