Architect of Global Jihad
By:Brynjar Lia
Published on 2009 by

Despite his alleged capture in Pakistan in late 2005, Abu Mus'ab al-Suri, a Syrian originally known as Mustafa Sethmarian Nasar, remains a potent political and ideological figure. One of the foremost theoreticians of the global jihadist movement, al-Suri trained a generation of young jihadis at al-Qaeda's Afghan camps and helped to establish the organization's vast European networks. Having gained extensive military experience fighting in the Syrian Islamist insurgency of the early 1980s, he helped to shape al-Qaeda's global strategy in a series of writings, including his influential Global Islamic Call. In that 1,600 page book, al-Suri outlined a broad strategy for al-Qaeda's younger generation to follow and described practical ways to implement the theories and tactics of jihadi guerrilla warfare. Architect of Global Jihad is a biography of this powerful, charismatic, and prophetic individual. Examining not only the life of Al-Suri but also the world that gave rise to him, Brynjar Lia reveals al-Suri's skill for maximizing the political impact of jihadi violence. Lia provides the first and only English translation of two key chapters from al-Suri's Global Islamic Call and exposes his methods for building successful, autonomous cells for |individualized terrorism.| Al-Suri's words have inspired thousands of today's militants, making Lia's carefully researched, detailed portrait required reading for students and specialists of Islamist movements and the study of contemporary forms of terrorism.

πŸ“– Ontological Security in International Relations

Ontological Security in International Relations
By:Brent J. Steele
Published on 2007-12-10 by Psychology Press

The central assertion of this book is that states pursue social actions to serve self-identity needs, even when these actions compromise their physical existence. Three forms of social action, sometimes referred to as ‘motives’ of state behaviour (moral, humanitarian, and honour-driven) are analyzed here through an ontological security approach. Brent J. Steele develops an account of social action which interprets these behaviours as fulfilling a nation-state's drive to secure self-identity through time. The anxiety which consumes all social agents motivates them to secure their sense of being, and thus he posits that transformational possibilities exist in the ‘Self’ of a nation-state. The volume consequently both challenges and complements realist, liberal, constructivist and post-structural accounts to international politics. Using ontological security to interpret three cases - British neutrality during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Belgium’s decision to fight Germany in 1914, and NATO’s (1999) Kosovo intervention - the book concludes by discussing the importance for self-interrogation in both the study and practice of international relations. Ontological Security in International Relations will be of particular interest to students and researchers of international politics, international ethics, international relations and security studies.

πŸ“– Writing the Self and Transforming Knowledge in International Relations

Writing the Self and Transforming Knowledge in International Relations
By:Erzsebet Strausz
Published on 2018-03-19 by Routledge

This book emerges from within the everyday knowledge practices of International Relations (IR) scholarship and explores the potential of experimental writing as an alternative source of ‘knowledge’ and political imagination within the modern university and the contemporary structures of neoliberal government. It unlocks and foregrounds the power of writing as a site of resistance and a vehicle of transformation that is fundamentally grounded in reflexivity, self-crafting and an ethos of care. In an attempt to cultivate new sensibilities to habitual academic practice the project re-appropriates the skill of writing for envisioning and enacting what it might mean to be working in the discipline of IR and inhabiting the usual spaces and scenes of academic life differently. The practice of experimental writing that intuitively unfolds and develops in the book makes an important methodological intervention into conventional social scientific inquiry both regarding the politics of writing and knowledge production as well as the role and position of the researcher. The formal innovations of the book include the actualization and creative remaking of the Foucaultian genre of the ‘experience book,’ which seeks to challenge scholarly routine and offers new experiences and modes of perception as to what it might mean to ‘know’ and to be a ‘knowing subject’ in our times. The book will be of interest to researchers engaged in critical and creative research methods (particularly narrative writing, autobiography, storytelling, experimental and transformational research), Foucault studies and philosophy, as well as critical approaches to contemporary government and studies of resistance.

πŸ“– Sovereignty

Sovereignty
By:Jean Bethke Elshtain
Published on 2008-06-10 by Basic Books

Throughout the history of human intellectual endeavor, sovereignty has cut across the diverse realms of theology, political thought, and psychology. From earliest Christian worship to the revolutionary ideas of Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, the debates about sovereignty—complete independence and self-government—have dominated our history. In this seminal work of political history and political theory, leading scholar and public intellectual Jean Bethke Elshtain examines the origins and meanings of “sovereignty” as it relates to all the ways we attempt to explain our world: God, state, and self. Examining the early modern ideas of God which formed the basis for the modern sovereign state, Elshtain carries her research from theology and philosophy into psychology, showing that political theories of state sovereignty fuel contemporary understandings of sovereignty of the self. As the basis of sovereign power shifts from God, to the state, to the self, Elshtain uncovers startling realities often hidden from view. Her thesis consists in nothing less than a thorough-going rethinking of our intellectual history through its keystone concept. The culmination of over thirty years of critically applauded work in feminism, international relations, political thought, and religion, Sovereignty opens new ground for our understanding of our own culture, its past, present, and future.

The Gospel of Self
By:Terry Heaton
Published on 2017-05-25 by OR Books

Terry Heaton, who worked alongside Robertson at The 700 Club and became its executive producer, provides the inside story of how evangelical Christianity forced itself on a needy Republican Party in order to gain political influence on a global level. Using deliberate and strategic social engineering, The 700 Club moved Christians steadily into the Republican Party–and moved the party itself to the right.

>>The Climate Majority

The Climate Majority
By:Leo Barasi
Published on 2017-10-10 by New Internationalist

The Climate Majority is the first book to investigate climate apathy, to describe how it prevents action to stop climate change and to show how it can be beaten with an approach developed for political campaigns. Leo Barasi argues that dangerous climate change will only be prevented if the majority of people—including those who aren’t environmentalists—are persuaded of the need to limit emissions. He applies his policy and campaign experience to show that politicizing climate change makes it more difficult to build consensus, particularly among people who are currently apathetic. This is one of few books to focus on public opinion and climate change and it attempts to reveal what people really think by drawing examples and evidence of from the United States, the UK, Australia, and Canada. In a time of growing nationalism in many developed countries—and right-wing negativity towards the need for meaningful action—The Climate Majority offers a new way of understanding what can be done within the system, rather than despite it. In an era of political setbacks for sustainability, we need new hope and new tools. Anyone who cares about climate change can draw on the lessons in this book to help build a climate majority. Leo Barasi is a freelance consultant on climate change policy and campaigns. He works with charities, political candidates, and private companies to help them understand and change public opinion. He writes regularly for the New Statesman, openDemocracy, and Climate Home.

πŸ“– The Self at Liberty

Download

The Self at Liberty
By:Duncan Ivison
Published on 1997 by Cornell University Press

Duncan Ivison sets out to map a subtle but significant addition to the political discourse on liberty. Using the political theories of Niccolo Machiavelli, John Locke, John Rawls, and Michel Foucault, Ivison contests one of the most famous distinctions in contemporary political philosophy: Isaiah Berlin's distinction between negative and positive liberty. Ivison explores a gradual shift of focus from the individual acting in accordance with authentic desires and beliefs to the actions of a self at liberty. One indication of this shift is an increasing tendency in the early modern period to ally liberty closely with ideas of security and stability. Liberal conceptions of government assume that the free choices of individuals are necessary to maintain a liberal political order with efficient markets and an effective rule of law. But free choices and actions, along with their intended and unintended effects, risk undermining some of the conditions that make such an order possible. Being free stands in contrast, classically, to being constrained by the intentional actions of other people. Ivison presses the relation between intentions and constraints a bit further, and investigates what happens to our conceptions of liberty when attention shifts from negative constraints to various enabling conditions.
